Understanding the Lifestyle Differences

Are you considering senior living?” “Is maintaining your home becoming a burden? You’re not alone. Men and women 55+ may be wary of homeownership’s responsibilities but aren’t sure where to start. There are so many choices! Senior apartments. Villas. Assisted living. Which one is the best for your health and lifestyle?

The first step is to take an honest look at your health.

  • Are you able to get around easily and take care of yourself?
  • Can you bathe and dress yourself?
  • Can you prepare your own meals and perform housekeeping chores?
  • Do you still drive?
  • Are you able to manage any chronic medical conditions you have?

If you answered “yes” to all of these questions, then you are a good candidate for a senior villa or apartment, where you will have your own space and complete autonomy over how you spend your time. You will also be responsible for all self-care and activities of daily living, as well as for adhering to care plans established by your personal physician.

Here are some ideas for activities for you and your grandchildren at your new home.

What is the difference between senior villas and apartments?

It’s easier to start by recognizing the similarities between senior villas and independent living apartments. A villa is a stand-alone home (house, townhouse, condo, or duplex) within a senior living community. Senior living communities also offer independent living apartments within buildings on the main campus. Now, throw in senior apartments. These are typically apartment complexes that are rented only to adults in a specific age group (55+, 60+, etc.). With all three options, residents maintain a high level of independence and can care for themselves without assistance.

Senior Villas Communities

As senior villas and independent living apartments are part of a senior living community, residents will have access to indoor and outdoor maintenance. The latter is desirable to villa residents as it relieves them of summer lawn care, winter snow removal, and grounds upkeep. Residents of villas and senior apartments will also have access to community amenities, including a fitness center, enrichment activities, events, and coordinated outings. Meal service, including the dining room, is also available, and you may also have access to preventive and emergency medical care.

Independent living senior apartments and senior villas may cost more than a senior apartment complex, but residents receive a lot more in return for their monthly rent. You will be living with like-minded neighbors who are at the same stage of life as you are. They will get it. So, in addition to all of the amenities, you’ll have a built-in support network as you adjust to leaving your long-time home. If the senior community is a CCRC (continuing care retirement community), you will have access to varying levels of care. If, for example, due to changes in your health, you need to move to assisted living, you can do so on the same campus. You’ll be familiar with the staff and your surroundings, so there will be minimal disruption to your daily life.

55+ Senior Apartment Complexes

A senior apartment complex is the same as living at any other apartment complex. You pay your monthly rent, plus utilities and other fees, such as pet rent or garage parking. Property management is responsible for all indoor and outdoor maintenance. You are responsible for your own meals, housekeeping, and entertainment, although some senior apartment complexes offer limited activities for residents. No medical services are available to residents. Property amenities may include a swimming pool, clubhouse, and fitness center. Like with any other apartment community, what is offered will all depend on the location and cost. The nicer the area and the broader the scope of amenities, the higher the rent. the community library.
