Senior villas are popular choices for individuals who are prepared to relocate but don’t need the depth of support provided by assisted living or a skilled nursing facility (SNF). Senior villas are part of a general retirement community and are stand-alone homes, duplexes, townhomes, or condos. They allow residents to maintain their desired level of independence while providing access to campus amenities.

A senior villa has a floor plan like that of a traditional home. You’ll have a living and dining area, a kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, a patio or balcony, and some villas include an attached garage and/or a basement. Villas are designed with safety and comfort in mind and may include features such as walk-in showers, wider doorways and hallways, emergency call systems, and grab bars in the bathrooms. All home maintenance will be performed by the community’s maintenance personnel, including lawn care, trash pickup, and winter snow removal. Your villa may have a washer and dryer hookup, and some communities offer laundry and housekeeping services.

As a resident of a senior living community, you will also have access to the community’s amenities such as a swimming pool, fitness center, beauty salon or barber shop, enrichment activities, events, and outings. You can also eat in the dining room or cook your own meals in your villa. You may also have access to preventive and emergency medical care (e.g., on-site nursing care). An added plus is that you will be protected by the community’s security patrol.

Your senior living community may be a CCRC (continuing care retirement community), which means that as your health needs change, you can adjust your living situation accordingly. For example, if you have surgery, you could receive assisted living care while you recover. Your monthly rent will increase, but it’s worth the peace of mind of knowing you can receive care in your villa without having to move. If you do need to permanently upgrade your level of care, such as moving to full-time assisted living, you will remain on the same campus. You will experience minimal disruption to your daily living routine.
